Technical questions

Here is a list of the most common technical problems that may arise and how to solve them.

Product and user issues

PainDrainer is for you who live with long-term (chronic) pain and want to understand how your daily activities effect your pain level. You want to increase your quality of life and want help finding a good balance of activities without your pain level becoming too high.

If you suffer from severe depression, you should consult your doctor before starting.

When you live with pain, it can be difficult to plan your day, or have energy left for activities that you value highly. The problem is that there are often too many activities in one day to understand what increases, or decreases the pain. PainDrainer uses advanced artificial intelligence (AI) calculations to analyze how an activity, or combination of activities, affects pain levels. The so-called AI engine is trained on the individual’s own data, which means that PainDrainer can give completely individual suggestions on what activities can be performed, without exceeding a certain pain level.

PainDrainer helps you to find the right activity balance, meaning the balance between different activities and pain. By keeping a diary, PainDrainer learns how your activities, or combinations of activities, affect your average pain.

After using PainDrainer for 8-12 days, PainDrainer will be able to give you individual advice. You get advice on how to plan your day, without exceeding a certain level of pain. You can also get help to estimate the level of pain certain activities are expected to cause. In this way, you will be able to prioritize what you do and have energy left for what really means something to you.

You will also get an overview of  the connections between your activities and your pain level.

Prolonged (chronic) pain means that you have had recurrent pain for more than 3 to 6 months. The causes of the pain can vary. In 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified chronic pain as a separate disease in the generally accepted standard for classification of diseases ICD-11.

Common long-term pain is back pain, pain in the neck and shoulders, fibromyalgia, nerve pain or joint pain.

Self-management is an important part of chronic pain care. According to an EU project (ReliefHorizon 2020 program grant No 689476), eHealth will play a significant role in supporting people’s self-management of long-term (chronic) pain.

PainDrainer is not for you who have cancer-related pain.

PainDrainer is based on science and is CE marked, i.e. follows the directives of the European Union and is registered with the Medical Products Agency.

We have developed PainDrainer in close collaboration with pain specialists, physiotherapists and psychologists who are active in pain rehabilitation that are based on clinically accepted practice used in leading pain clinics. With the help of artificial intelligence (AI), this practice is made available digitally. We also work closely with people who themselves live with long-term (chronic) pain.

PainDrainer increases knowledge and management of one’s own pain. This in turn can lead to increased quality of life, pain relief and reduce the impact of pain on your life situation.

PainDrainer is based on self-management together with  Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Self-management is an important part of chronic pain care. According to an EU project (ReliefHorizon 2020 program grant No 689476), eHealth will play a significant role in supporting people’s self-management of long-term (chronic) pain.

Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) has been shown to have a good effect on people with long-term (chronic) pain by improving the quality of life, reducing the number of sick days and increasing control over their own life situation.

We also conduct our own clinical studies together with leading pain clinics.

PainDrainer gives you individual advice based on the connections between your activities and your pain. The application uses advanced calculations based on artificial intelligence (AI) to calculate how an activity, or combination of activities, affects your pain level. The so-called AI engine needs about 8-12 days before it has learned how it works for you.

A good thing to keep in mind is that the more often you keep a diary, the faster and better advice you can get.

PainDrainer is your ever-present digital pain coach who daily helps you achieve your activity balance. PainDrainer is continuously trained on your specific data, which means that the suggestions are constantly improved and changed as you reach and set new activity goals.

As long as you are in need of achieving or maintaining a good activity balance, PainDrainer is a help for you.

Once you have filled in your diary for 8 days, you can start using the Planning function. Then you can get answers to questions such as:

  • What pain do I get from the activities I have planned today?
  • What activities can I do if I do not want to exceed a mean pain of 5?

Keep in mind that the more days you fill in your diary, the faster and better suggestions you can get. Planning works even if you forget to fill in the diary some day.

You decide what to include in each activity. The important thing is that you are consistent, i.e. that the activity means the same thing every time you fill in your diary. To help you, you can make notes under ”settings” where you describe what each activity means to you. For instant, that work can include even when you are sitting at the computer or driving a car.

Keep in mind that you can use intensity to distinguish different activities. A walk can be low intensity while a bike ride may be medium or high intensity. You decide for yourself based on your life situation.

No, the total number of hours does not have to be exactly 24 hour. It can vary between different days. You can also skip an activity if you have not performed it.

It is best to fill in the diary as soon as you have completed an activity. For example, it is good to fill in sleep when you wake up or work (i.e. the activity that you have chosen to describe during work) immediately after it is finished. Then you have the experience fresh in your mind.

Yes, all registered and saved information can be changed for 72 hours, i.e. you can change what you entered today, yesterday and the day before yesterday.

No, there are no risks or side effects from using PainDrainer.

PainDrainer was founded in 2018 by Prof. Carl Borrebaeck and his research coordinator Dr. Maria Rosén Klement who lives with chronic pain, and Göran Barkfors, IT specialist. The idea was born together when Maria, after participating in several pain rehabilitation programs, realized that the pain is affected by more factors than what can be kept track of herself, as one day is rarely the same as the other. PainDrainer uses advanced calculations to provide unique suggestions for the right activity balance to each user.
